We are passionate about living into the reality of God's grace in Christ, and we're excited about living into this new life with you.

Trygve Johnson

Trygve Johnson, Dean of the Chapel

"They shall be like trees planted by streams of living water..."  This is my daily prayer, adapted from Psalm 1, which captures my deepest desire for each person in the Hope community.  I painted my study shades of green to help us remember this prayer and to trust that God's business is often one of slow growth formation.  I need this reminder daily. Maturity doesn't happen over night.  And God does the growing, not us.  As Hopes Dean of the Chapel, the best I can do is tend and keep the soil conditions for mature gospel growth.  It is experiencing this growth that gives me hope.  It is inspiring to be in the presence of a generation of women and men who sink roots deep into the dark soil of the gospel, even as they spiral upwards towards the light of Christ.  It is in this vision that together, as a community of Hope, we will be like a mature forest, growing in the symbiotic mystery of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ.

Paul Boersma

Paul Boersma, Senior Chaplain

I am really passionate about working with college students. Their willingness to dream and risk gives me great hope for the future. However, what gives me even greater hope is a belief in a God who cares deeply about each one of us and our world. I love exploring how this all plays out in real life. If you are interested in talking about dreams, future, God, and life, I'm buying the coffee!

Kate Davelaar

Kate Davelaar, Chaplain

"Wherever you are, be all there" (Jim Elliot). I try to live fully present in every moment, conversation and relationship...which, depending on the moment, can be easier said than done! I desire to draw people into the present and into relationship with one another and the world because I believe that's where we find God: in the everyday-nitty-gritty-seemingly-mundane-not-always-so-glamorous parts of life. I am excited to be at Hope this year and look forward to being present with those around me.

Kate Kooyman

Kate Kooyman, Director of Outreach & Social Justice

I am a Christian who longs for "the way it's supposed to be" -- a world where people have dignity, where all of creation can flourish, where Jesus's "good news" is experienced by rich and poor alike. That's what makes me passionate about social justice. I am excited to find that God allows me to play a role in making this world a little more just. And I am excited to learn from and walk beside Hope students as we each find our place in working toward a more just world. When I'm not thinking about poverty and refugees and deforestation and labor rights and immigrants... I'm probably watching my son Jake smear blueberries all over his face, hearing about my husband Erek's day in his crazy 5th grade classroom, or sneaking off to a garage sale to buy things that I don't really need. Need a toaster? I have fifteen. (I'm kidding.)

Josh Banner, Minister of Arts & Worship

Two things important to me: loving and learning with purpose. I’m delighted to serve at a place where I get be an artist, a thinker, a worshiper of God all at the same time and be a friend to so many college students. When you don’t find me in Dimnent Chapel, you can find me in the recording studio or with students at the coffee shop. I am honored to teach a class on Worship and Theology.  Even if you aren’t a regular at chapel, I’d love to get to know you and talk about music, film, pop culture, books, cooking, canoeing, backpacking, faith, and doubt. If you are interested in these things or would just like to just hang out, come find me or email me. You’ll get an earful on my lovely wife, Susanna Childress, and our new baby boy, Casper…I’ll probably show you pictures too.

Lori Bouwman, Administrative Assistant

I love life and enjoy serving and interacting with people. In the journey of life, I'm married to my best friend, and have two sons. One is a senior here at Hope, and my oldest son got married a year ago, and I'm blessed to have a daughter now! I’m honored to work with such a great staff and group of college students in Campus Ministries and share the joy of the Lord which truly is my strength with those around me. So five days a week you'll find me at the Keppel House keeping the Campus Ministries staff organized and on task...it's a full time job and I love it!

Paul Chamness

Paul Chamness, Technician Director

“Technical Infrastructure” is one of my favorite phrases. I’m a behind-the-scenes kind of guy who loves to “get it done.” I and a volunteer Tech Crew of incredibly dedicated students do whatever is necessary to provide the audio, video, and lighting technical support for 129 (give or take) Campus Ministries Chapel and Gathering services every year. That’s a good number of 6:30 AM set-ups! My wife and I both graduated from Hope, (and perhaps someday my son will too) and it is a joy to be back, working with and for such good people. As a part of Hope Campus Ministries I can “get it done” for the glory of God. Can it get any better than that?

Jerry Root

Jerry Root, Volunteer Associate Chaplain

I am a retired teacher, having taught and coached at the elementary and middle school level here in Holland (Hope Grad - Class of '75). I am involved in the Holland High Young Life program as a leader. I find being involved with students keeps me young (perhaps) and inspired! The opportunity to plug into the campus ministry program as a volunteer is a real privilege. I love being around college students. I love to listen to their life stories... to hear about their daily accomplishments or struggles... to encourage them in their faith journey...to pray for them and with them... to open and discuss the Bible with them...to explore what being a devoted follower of Christ might look like. Stop and introduce yourself when you see me on campus!
